Dominica Appoints First Female President

The Commonwealth of Dominica has elected its first female president, Mrs. Sylvanie Burton. On September 29, 2023, the National Assembly voted 20-5 to confirm her nomination, which had been submitted by the Prime Minister-led administration.

Burton is a member of the Kalinago indigenous people and is a respected leader in the community. She has served in a number of public roles, including as a member of the Kalinago Council and as the Kalinago Chief’s representative to the government. She is also a successful businesswoman and entrepreneur.

Burton’s election as president is a historic moment for Dominica. It represents a significant step forward in terms of gender equality and indigenous representation in government. It is also a testament to Burton’s own qualifications and accomplishments.

In her acceptance speech, Burton pledged to serve all Dominicans with distinction and to work tirelessly to promote the country’s development. She also expressed her commitment to working with the government to address the challenges facing Dominica, including poverty, unemployment, and climate change.
